The whistle bottle from Hungary
Fütyülős means something like little whistle, and that refers to the bottle: the neck is shaped so that you can whistle on it. It is a familiar sight in Hungary.
Barack is Hungarian for apricot. This bottle contains a drink based on fruit distillate and honey. Zwack itself markets Fütyülős as a liqueur, not as a pálinka, and at 34.5 percent it is also below the strength usual for pálinka.
The range is now broad: besides apricot, there are sour cherry, blueberry, watermelon and strawberry, among others. We stock the apricot, the brand's classic flavour.

What is pálinka?
Pálinka is the Hungarian name for fruit distillate: fermented fruit that has been distilled, without added sugar or flavouring. The best-known types are apricot (barack), plum (szilva) and pear. What may be called pálinka is regulated by law in Hungary, and the strength is higher than that of this bottle. Fütyülős carries the name on the label but is listed by its maker as a liqueur.
A Zwack Unicum brand
- The brand in brief

- BarackHungarian for apricot.
- HoneyPart of the base, alongside fruit distillate.
- The bottleA neck you can whistle on.
Fütyülős is a brand of Zwack Unicum, the Hungarian drinks house best known for the herbal bitter Unicum. The brand draws on the Hungarian pálinka tradition and the fruit of the Puszta.
The base is fruit distillate with honey. That makes the drink sweeter and softer than a true pálinka, which is dry and considerably stronger.
According to Zwack, the whistle bottle itself goes back centuries; it was redesigned in 2018 with tulip motifs and a honeycomb relief.
Pálinka or liqueur: why it matters
In a pálinka, all the flavour comes from the fruit and the distilling; nothing may be added. In this bottle, honey is part of the base, which is why the product is listed as a liqueur. That is not a value judgement, but it makes a difference to what you get in the glass: sweeter, rounder and less strong.
Who is this bottle for?
If you know Hungary and are looking for the bottle you see on tables there, this is it. The whistle neck also makes it a recognisable gift.
If you are looking for a dry pálinka at full strength, this is not the bottle for you. Give us a call and we will look with you at what is on the shelf.
