What makes a gin a gin?
- In brief
- JuniperThe only compulsory ingredient.
- London dryAll the flavour during distillation.
- Distilled ginMay add flavour afterwards.
- OriginGin comes from Dutch jenever.
Gin is neutral alcohol in which botanicals have steeped, with one mandatory ingredient: juniper berry. Without juniper berry it is not gin. Everything else is the maker’s free choice: coriander, citrus peel, angelica root, cucumber, rose petal. That is where the difference between two bottles lies.
London dry is not an origin but a method: all flavour must be taken along during distillation, nothing may be added afterwards. Distilled gin may do that, and with compound gin the flavours go into the alcohol without distillation.
Gin comes from our own jenever: English soldiers got to know it in the Low Countries and took it home with them.
Without juniper it is not gin. Everything else is the maker's free choice.
