Why here

Sea buckthorn, heather and rowan

Three of the eight botanicals come from the area around the distillery: sea buckthorn from the coast, heather from the hills and rowan. Alongside them the classic five: juniper berries, coriander seed, angelica, lemon peel and bitter orange peel.

The gin comes from Benromach in Forres, from Gordon & MacPhail. We also stock whisky from the same distillery; you will find it on the Benromach page.

Benromach in Forres belongs to Gordon & MacPhail of Elgin, a house best known as an independent bottler. The distillery has striking red doors; that is where the gin gets its name.

Red Door appeared in 2018 and is distilled in a separate copper still of five hundred litres, called Peggy. The botanicals hang in the vapour above the alcohol instead of steeping in it.

Despite the name Highland Gin, it is a gin in the London Dry style: that designation says something about the way it is made, not about the place.

The name comes from the red doors of the distillery in Forres.

Practical

What 45 percent means in the glass

A 45 percent gin keeps its botanicals standing better when you dilute it than a 37.5 percent bottle. You notice this especially in a gin and tonic with plenty of ice.

Sea buckthorn brings a sour, almost orange-like citrus note; heather pulls the whole towards floral. Then choose a neutral tonic.

If you would like the whisky from the same house as well, see the Benromach page.
