Balloon, tulip or weizen: what is the difference?
This is the question we get at the counter, and the answer lies in the shape.
The balloon glass of 0.3 litres is wide and round. Plenty of surface, so plenty of room for the aroma, and the largest capacity of the three.
The 0.2 litre tulip glass narrows slightly again towards the top. That narrowing channels the aroma towards your nose instead of letting it escape. It is also the smallest of the three, which is handy if you want to taste several beers side by side.
The 30 centilitre weizen glass is the tall, twisted shape: 21 centimetres tall and 6 centimetres across, with a brown Othmar logo on it. That height is there for the head, because a wheat beer produces a lot of foam.

What the shape of a glass is all about
- The three glasses
- Rounded0.3 litre, wide and round.
- Tulip0.2 litre, narrowing slightly towards the top.
- Weizen30 cl, 21 cm high and 6 cm in diameter.
- NetherlandsWhere the brewery comes from.
The most important rule is this: a glass that narrows slightly towards the top collects aroma, and a glass that opens out towards the top lets aroma escape. That is why whisky is served in a tulip glass and pils in a straight glass.
At Othmar you can see those principles side by side. The tulip glass narrows and focuses. The rounded glass first gives plenty of room and then tapers in a little, like a wine glass. The wheat beer glass is mainly tall, because wheat beer produces more foam than the rest and that head needs centimetres.
Which one you choose therefore depends on what you pour into it. Othmar makes, among others, a dunkel weizen; the weizen glass was made for that.
Grease is the enemy of foam
Rinse a beer glass with hot water free of detergent residue, and don't dry it with a towel washed with fabric softener. Grease residue makes the head collapse within a minute. That is the most common reason beer foams differently at home than in the pub.
Which Othmar glass suits you?
For weizen: the 30 centilitre weizen glass. Tall enough for the head, and the only one of the three whose dimensions we know: 21 centimetres tall, 6 centimetres across.
For a larger glass with lots of aroma: the round glass of 0.3 litre. Wide, round, and the largest content of the three.
For tasting: the 0.2 litre tulip glass. Small, and the shape channels the aroma towards your nose.

Frequently asked questions about the Othmar glasses
What is the difference between the round glass, the tulip glass and the wheat beer glass from Othmar?
Shape and size. The round glass is wide and rounded and holds up to 0.3 litres. The tulip glass is smaller, 0.2 litres, and tapers slightly towards the top, which gathers the aroma. The wheat beer glass is tall and twisted, 30 centilitres, 21 centimetres high and 6 centimetres across, with a brown Othmar logo.
How many centilitres do the Othmar glasses hold?
0.3 litres in the rounded glass, 0.2 litres in the tulip glass and 30 centilitres in the weizen glass.
Which glass do I need for a weizen?
The weizen glass. Wheat beer produces a lot of foam, and that glass is tall enough to give the head room without overflowing.
Can I order a single glass?
Yes. Each glass is sold individually, so you order exactly the number you need. A set is not required.
Can these glasses go in the dishwasher?
We have no statement from the manufacturer on that, so we do not promise it. In any case, rinse beer glasses afterwards free of detergent residue: grease residues make the head collapse.
Can I collect the glasses in Bathmen?
Yes. You can always order online or collect at Brink 2, or simply drop in during opening hours.
