Why here

A bottler that puts its cards on the table

Cane Island buys rum from distilleries around the world and bottles it in Amsterdam. What sets the brand apart is its openness: the label states which country the rum comes from, how old it really is and whether it comes from a pot still or a column still.

The ageing is a deliberate choice too: everything matures in the tropics, at its place of origin, and not in a European warehouse. For an independent bottler, that is unusual.

The ten bottles we have in stock

What does single estate mean?

That the rum comes from a single distillery and has not been blended with rum from elsewhere. The age on the bottle is the actual age of the youngest rum in the cask, not the oldest, as sometimes happens with solera systems.

Behind Cane Island is Infinity Spirits from Amsterdam. The blender is Hein Smit, who previously worked at the Amsterdam trading house E&A Scheer, the company that has been blending rum for third parties for centuries and that most people have never heard of.

Rum that matures in the tropics does so faster than rum in a cool European warehouse, but much more also evaporates per year. Cane Island deliberately chooses that tropical side; the rum therefore goes into the bottle more mature than its age suggests.

The origin ranges from Jamaica and Barbados to Thailand and Australia. That makes the range interesting to line up side by side: the same bottler, the same approach, entirely different rum.

Country, age and type of still: it is all simply on the label.

Which bottle

Where best to start

If you want to know what pot still does for rum, start with Jamaica. It is the most pronounced of the range.

For those who want it calmer: Panama and Barbados are the softer side of the spectrum.

The bottles from Thailand and Australia are the ones you will hardly find anywhere else. Call 0570 541 278 if you would like to talk it over.
