Why here

Colombian rum with an idiosyncratic label

Dictador comes from Cartagena de Indias, the port city on the Colombian north coast. The distillery goes back to 1913; the brand as we know it has existed since 2010.

What stands out is the range of bottles: besides the regular 10, 12 and 20 years there are editions designed more as art objects than as drink bottles. We have eight of them, from the core range to the Game Charger bottles.

Look out for the word solera

Some Dictador bottles say solera. In Jerez that means a system in which young and old wine are systematically blended. At Dictador the word is used differently: it is mainly about topping up casks of the same vintage to compensate for evaporation. Good to know if you know the term from sherry.

For centuries Cartagena de Indias was the port where the silver and the trade of the Spanish colonies came together. The walled old town is on the World Heritage List; the distillery linked to the brand dates back to 1913.

The rum is made from sugar cane syrup and matures in Colombia, in casks that previously held bourbon, sherry or port. In that climate maturation is fast and much more evaporates each year than in Europe.

The brand has been owned since 2009 by the Polish entrepreneur Mariusz Jawoszek; the master blender is Hernán Parra.

From the old port city where the Spanish fleet set sail.

Which bottle

Where best to start

The 12 Years is the logical starting point: it is the bottle that made the brand known in the Netherlands.

The 20 Years is the step after that. The Aurum, the XO Perpetual and the Game Charger editions are smaller releases, often bought as much for the bottle as for what is inside.
