Why here

Kill devil: the old name for rum

In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries raw Caribbean rum was called kill devil: devil killer. It was no compliment: the drink was sharp, unaged and not meant for connoisseurs.

Hunter Laing uses that name for its rum range: single casks, bottled by hand in Glasgow, at 46 percent or cask strength, without colouring and without chill filtration. The whisky from the same house is on the Hunter Laing page.

Hunter Laing is a Glasgow family business, now in its third generation. The house is best known for its whisky ranges and for the Ardnahoe distillery on Islay.

Kill Devil is their rum range: casks purchased from distilleries in Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and elsewhere and bottled in Scotland.

A bottle from 1991 that spent 24 years in cask does not come back; such bottlings are by definition one-off.

Kill devil was the nickname for raw rum in the seventeenth century.

Where best to start

The Blended Caribbean is the entry point and the least expensive.

The Jamaica 12 years shows the Jamaican style; the Trinidad 24 years is a collector’s bottle.

If you would like the whisky from the same house as well, see the Hunter Laing page.
