Matured twice, in two climates
The idea behind this brand is double ageing: the rum first matures in its country of origin, in the tropics, where it goes fast. It then goes to France for a second round in, among others, cognac and whisky casks, in a much cooler climate where it goes slowly.
The rum itself comes from distilleries in Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad, Panama, Belize and Fiji. Since 2017 Maison Ferrand has been co-owner of the West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados.

Planteray Rum O.F.T.D. Overproof
O.F.T.D. Overproof, under the new name Planteray.

Why is Plantation now called Planteray?
The brand changed its name in January 2024, because the word plantation is internationally heavily loaded by the history of slavery on the sugar cane plantations. The new name combines plant with ray, the sunlight that sugar cane needs. The rum in the bottle remained unchanged; in the shop the old and the new labels are still mixed together for a while.
Maison Ferrand, in Cognac
- The house in brief
- 1999The brand is launched.
- 2017Co-owner of the West Indies Rum Distillery.
- 2024Plantation becomes Planteray.
- ArsChâteau de Bonbonnet, France.
Behind the brand is Maison Ferrand, a French family business from Cognac led by Alexandre Gabriel. The house makes cognac and gin and became known through this rum range.
The second maturation takes place at Château de Bonbonnet in Ars. That is where the brand puts its own signature: which French casks are used and for how long determines the difference from the rum as it came from the tropics.
Since 2017 the house also has its own distillery in Barbados, the West Indies Rum Distillery. For the rest, it buys from well-known names such as Long Pond, Clarendon, Hampden and Demerara Distillers.
First maturing quickly in the tropics, then slowly in France.
Where best to start
The 3 Stars and the Original Dark are the bottles for behind the bar: they are made for mixing.
If you want to taste what that second maturation does, add the Barbados 5 or the Xaymaca. The Xaymaca comes from Jamaica and is a lot more pronounced.
The O.F.T.D. is overproof and therefore strong; it is meant for tiki cocktails and not for pouring neat.
