What does the age on a rum bottle mean?

According to Article 13 of Regulation (EU) 2019/787, an age on a rum bottle refers to the youngest alcoholic component in the bottle, not to the average and not to the oldest cask. Rum has no minimum maturation in the European Union. Whisky must spend three years in wood; for rum, no period at all is set in the law.

In brief

The key figures

Legal rule Article 13 of Regulation (EU) 2019/787
What the number refers to The youngest alcoholic component
Minimum maturation of rum in the EU None
Minimum maturation of whisky in the EU Three years, casks of up to 700 litres
Minimum alcohol in rum 37.5% vol
Permitted addition to rum Caramel for color, sweetening up to 20 grams per liter
Jamaica Rum Maturation exclusively in Jamaica, under the supervision of the Excise Office
Tequila for comparison Reposado two months, añejo one year, extra añejo three years

What does the number on a rum bottle refer to?

The number refers to the youngest alcoholic component in the bottle.

Article 13 of Regulation (EU) 2019/787 permits a maturation period or age only when it refers to the youngest alcoholic component of the spirit drink. For a blend of casks of eight, twelve and twenty years, eight may therefore appear on the label. The rule applies to all spirit drinks placed on the market in the European Union, including rum distilled outside Europe.

Does the absence of an age mean the rum is young?

No, because rum has no mandatory minimum maturation and no mandatory age statement in the European Union.

Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2019/787 names no maturation period and no cask size for rum. A bottler may therefore put a long-matured rum on the market without a number. Conversely, a bottle without an age says nothing in itself about how long the contents have lain in wood.

What does a solera designation on a bottle of rum mean?

A solera designation describes a way of topping up, not the maturation time of the whole bottle.

In a solera, casks are partly drawn off and topped up again with younger rum, so that old and young continually mingle. For an age statement on the label, Article 13 continues to apply: the number must refer to the youngest component. A number that belongs to the solera system and does not meet that requirement is not an age statement within the European Union.

May a rum that ages elsewhere still state its origin?

Not always: with the protected designation Jamaica Rum, maturation must take place in Jamaica.

On 2 October 2024, the Jamaica Intellectual Property Office determined that maturation under the designation Jamaica Rum may take place exclusively in Jamaica, under supervision of the Jamaican Excise Office. Maturation in Europe therefore falls outside the designation. For rum in general there is no such requirement; it follows per country from its own origin protection.

What else may be in a bottle of rum?

Rum may contain, besides water and caramel for colour, at most 20 grams of sweetener per litre.

Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2019/787 prohibits flavouring in rum and allows caramel only for colour correction. Sweetening is allowed to round off the taste, up to 20 grams per litre expressed as invert sugar. Anyone looking for a rum without sweetening can look for the term traditionnel: the regulation links that to distillation below 90 percent and to a ban on sweetening.

Yes. Article 13 of Regulation (EU) 2019/787 applies to all spirit drinks: the number refers to the youngest component.
