Auchentoshan Three Wood alongside Trinidad Reyes
A sweet Lowland malt from three casks alongside a slim Cuban petit corona. The sweetness of the cask contrasts here with the pepper of the wrapper.

From the shelf
The bottle
Auchentoshan is near Glasgow, in the Lowlands, and distils three times instead of twice. Three Wood carries no age statement, matured successively in American oak, oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks, and is bottled at 43 percent by volume. That gives raisin, orange peel and a touch of woody sweetness, with a fresh, fruity finish.
The combination
Why this works together
A slim cigar brings relatively a lot of wrapper compared with filler, and the pepper sits mostly in the wrapper. That pepper needs something to set itself against; here that is the sweetness from the two sherry casks. Because the malt is not peated, the tobacco remains the only source of smoke.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- Trinidad Reyes Slim Cuban petit corona of 110 mm; enough pepper from the wrapper to give the sherry sweetness something to work with.
- Por Larrañaga Panetelas Even slimmer and milder, for those who want the sweetness of the whisky to lead.
- Romeo y Julieta No. 3 Slim Cuban of moderate strength, woody and floral.
- El Rey del Mundo Demi Tasse The shortest of the four, mild and spicy; suitable if you only have half an hour.
In the glass
Serving
Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 43 percent alcohol by volume, a single drop of water can open up the sherry note slightly; more is not needed. Keep the glass out of the smoke and drink between puffs.
