Bunnahabhain 12 Years Old alongside Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill

The unpeated Islay malt beside a Cuban robusto. Here the smoke comes only from the cigar, and that is the whole idea.

Bottle of Bunnahabhain 12 Years Old, whisky

From the shelf

The bottle

Bunnahabhain is on the north-east side of Islay. The standard twelve-year-old is unpeated, matures partly in sherry casks and is bottled at 46.3 percent alcohol by volume. You taste nuts, dried fruit and a salty note; where the neighbours on the island bring peat smoke, this one brings mainly cask.

The combination

Why this works together

A robusto is thick and has relatively a lot of filler; that gives body without the pepper of the wrapper taking the lead. Against that body you set cask rather than smoke here: the sherry note runs beneath the tobacco smoke instead of against it. At 46.3 per cent ABV the whisky has enough weight not to fade.

Beside the glass

The cigar

We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

  • Romeo y Julieta Short Churchill Cuban robusto of 124 mm, medium strength; woody and floral, with body from the filler leaf.
  • Juan Lopez Selección No. 2 Robusto of the same class, a little spicier, and a calm partner for an unpeated malt.
  • H. Upmann Magnum 50 Thicker and longer, with Upmann's restrained house style; for a longer sitting.
  • Vegas Robaina Famosos Cuban robusto with an earthy, mild build-up that leaves room for the sherry note.

In the glass

Serving

Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 46.3 percent ABV a few drops of water open up the sherry note a little further. Drink it in the pauses between puffs; drinking through the smoke flattens both.
