Glen Scotia 12 Years Old next to Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de San Juan
A Campbeltown malt with sea air and citrus, alongside a mild but thick Cuban. Salt against sweet wood.

From the shelf
The bottle
Glen Scotia is in Campbeltown. This bottling is twelve years old and is at 46 percent ABV. The nose opens with fresh sea air, honey-sweet vanilla and a hint of tropical fruit; on the palate caramelised sugar, spicy citrus and pineapple, with oak and a maritime character underneath. The finish is long and warming, with cinnamon and nutmeg.
The combination
Why this works together
Le Hoyo de San Juan is 150 mm long and wide in ring gauge. Hoyo de Monterrey is the mildest of the great Cuban houses: sweet wood and cedar smoke instead of pepper. That sweet wood note ties in with the vanilla and cinnamon in the whisky, while the salt and citrus keep the whole from turning out too sweet.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- Hoyo de Monterrey Le Hoyo de San Juan Cuban size of 150 mm, mild and sweet in the wood, next to the vanilla and cinnamon of Glen Scotia.
- H. Upmann Magnum 50 Same order of magnitude, 160 mm, but drier and nuttier in tone.
- Montecristo Double Edmundo 155 mm with cocoa and pepper, as a counterweight to the sweetness.
- Davidoff Nicaragua Toro Toro of 152 mm with clear pepper, a different direction from the Cubans.
In the glass
Serving
Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 46 percent ABV a few drops of water bring out the citrus fruit. Drink each time after the smoke has left the mouth.
