Laphroaig 10 Years Old Sherry Oak Finish alongside Padrón 1964 Exclusivo

Heavily peated Islay with a sherry finish, next to a Nicaraguan robusto from the upper tier of that country. This is the combination for those who want both full.

From the shelf

The bottle

Laphroaig is on the south coast of Islay. This ten-year-old got a finish in sherry oak after its first maturation and is at 48 percent ABV. The aroma is medicinal and smoky, with honey, clove, leather and pine needle; the sherry cask lays a sweet layer beneath.

The combination

Why this works together

A Nicaraguan puro of this weight brings pepper, earth and cocoa and so holds its own against the peat. The sherry finish makes the difference: without that sweet layer, two dry, smoky partners would make each other harsh. At 48 percent ABV the whisky does lead, so take the glass slowly.

The cigar

We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

This is what the size of the Padrón 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo looks like: box-pressed format, straight, with flat sides instead of round. This is a drawing of our own in our house style, not a photo from the brand; we do not sell cigars.

  • Padrón 1964 Anniversary Exclusivo Pressed Nicaraguan puro, full-bodied; pepper and cocoa against the peat.
  • Padrón 1926 Serie No. 35 From the same house and a notch fuller; only if you dilute the whisky generously with water.
  • My Father Le Bijou 1922 Full-bodied Nicaraguan cigar with a dark wrapper and plenty of pepper.
  • Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 Classically heavy Nicaraguan, earthy and spicy; the driest of the four.

In the glass

Serving

Neat in a tulip glass, but with water to hand. At 48% ABV the alcohol sharpens the palate and the smoke then tastes flat; half a teaspoon of water sets that right without the whisky losing any weight. Drink it in the pauses between puffs.
