Laphroaig Quarter Cask alongside Cohiba Robustos
An Islay malt at 48 percent ABV alongside the best-known Cuban robusto. Iodine and salt against wood and grass.

From the shelf
The bottle
Laphroaig sits on the south coast of Islay. This single malt is bottled at 48 percent by volume and is golden in colour. The nose is intensely smoky and medicinal, with brine, iodine and orange; on the palate first soft, then malt, spices, salt and fruit. The finish moves from orange to a light bitterness with nuts and coffee beans.
The combination
Why this works together
A 124 mm robusto gives a dense, even smoke. Cohiba sets itself apart from the other Cuban houses with a grassy, woody note instead of heavy earth. That difference is the point here: next to the iodine and salt of Laphroaig, an earthy cigar stays too much in the same place, while the wood of Cohiba clearly sets something against it.
Beside the glass
The cigar
We do not sell cigars; we supply the whisky. These cigars go well alongside this bottle.

- Cohiba Robustos Cuban robusto of 124 mm, woody and grassy, which counterbalances the iodine of Laphroaig.
- Hoyo de Monterrey Petit Robusto Petit robusto of 110 mm, milder and shorter, for those who want to keep the whisky in front.
- Bolívar Petit Corona Petit corona of 129 mm, narrow and heavy, so the pepper comes in sharper.
- Vegas Robaina Famosos Robusto of 124 mm with an earthier tone, closer to the smoke in the whisky itself.
In the glass
Serving
Neat in a tulip-shaped glass. At 48 percent ABV this bottle is robust; a few drops of water bring out the creamy side. Enjoy it in the pauses between puffs.
