A Dutch drink that began as cognac
Vieux is homegrown. At the end of the nineteenth century, Dutch distillers made their own version of cognac: not from wine distillate but from neutral grain or molasses alcohol, brought to the right colour and flavour with water, caramel and aromas and flavourings. Here it was simply called Hollandse cognac.
That came to an end under French pressure. The Wine Decree of 1959 reserved the name cognac for eau-de-vie from the Charente. The distillers were given two years, and from 1 September 1961 the bottle said vieux (French for old), a word that already appeared on Dutch labels as a quality designation.
De Kuyper is one of the houses that kept making it after that changeover. According to the company, French brandy goes into this bottle. We have one of them in stock, the litre bottle.

Started out as a cooper, not a distiller
- The house in brief

- 1752The purchase of a distillery in Schiedam, and the start with jenever.
- 1769–1910The years in which the company operated from Rotterdam.
- RoyalThe designation that the family business carries.
The name says it all: De Kuyper began in 1695 not as a distiller but as a cooper, in Horst in Limburg. For about a century the family made casks.
In 1752 the company bought a distillery in Schiedam and began distilling itself. From 1769 to 1910 it was based in Rotterdam; then De Kuyper returned to Schiedam, where it still is today.
The house has been in the hands of the same family for more than three hundred and twenty-five years and bears the Royal title. Outside the Netherlands, De Kuyper is known mainly for its liqueurs for the cocktail bar. At home, jenever and this vieux are on the shelf too.
