Dutch cognac that had to be called vieux
Vieux is a Dutch drink and one with a history. Around 1900 Dutch distillers made their own cognac: not distilled wine, but neutral grain or molasses alcohol with water, caramel and aromas and flavourings. On the bottle it said Hollandse cognac, in the pub it was called a koetsiertje.
France objected to that. The Dutch Wine Decree of 1959 reserved the name cognac for eau-de-vie from the Charente and gave the Dutch distillers two years to change their labels. From 1 September 1961 it was called vieux, after the French word for old that already appeared on the bottles as a quality indication.
Dujardin is older than that changeover. According to the producer, the brand came into being around 1920, when its own recipe for Hollandse cognac was developed with French cognac and eau-de-vie in it. We have two bottle sizes of it.

Little about the origins of Dujardin has been independently documented. What the producer itself states is this: the brand came into being around 1920, in the period when a proprietary recipe for Dutch cognac was developed. That recipe uses two French components, cognac and eau-de-vie.
That fits the time. In the years after the First World War, when the import of French cognac had come to a standstill, Dutch production rose sharply. Whoever could not get French distillate made it themselves.
After the name change of 1961, vieux remained a big drink in the Netherlands. Sales tripled between 1960 and 1965, and until 1985 vieux was, after young jenever, the best-selling spirit in the country.

Frequently asked questions about Dujardin
How many bottles of Dujardin does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Two, both available for immediate delivery: the litre bottle and the 50 centilitre bottle.
What is the difference between the two bottles?
Only the quantity. Both are at 35 percent according to the label.
What actually is vieux?
Vieux is a Dutch spirit that came about as a replacement for cognac. It is made from neutral grain or molasses alcohol with water, caramel and flavourings, and usually sits at 35 percent. Until 1961, Dutch distillers sold it as Dutch cognac.
Since when has Dujardin existed?
According to the producer, the brand originated around 1920, with its own recipe for Dutch cognac that incorporated cognac and eau-de-vie.
Why is it called vieux and no longer cognac?
Because the name cognac is legally reserved for eau-de-vie from the French Charente. The Wijnbesluit of 1959 laid that down; from 1 September 1961 the Dutch distillers sold their product as vieux.
