From genever to whisky
Boomsma started in 1883 at the foot of the Oldehove in Leeuwarden, with jenever and Beerenburg. Whisky only came much later: in 2015 the company invested in its own copper stills and took production fully into its own hands.
The first Dutch Single Malt appeared in 2023, for the 140th anniversary: seven years old, one hundred percent barley, matured in ex-bourbon casks of American oak, in a run of two thousand two hundred numbered bottles. The Second Release followed with the same profile and a larger run of just over three thousand bottles.

Five generations in Leeuwarden
- The company in brief
- 1883Dirk Boomsma begins in Leeuwarden.
- 1960Move to the Edisonstraat.
- 2015Its own copper stills.
- 2023The first Dutch Single Malt.
Dirk Boomsma began in 1883 at the foot of the Oldehove. In 1960 the company moved to the Edisonstraat, where it still is. Management is now in the hands of the fifth generation.
Boomsma is known to many for Frisian herbal bitters and for brands it carries but does not make itself, such as the Scotch blend Glen Talloch. Since 2015 the house has been distilling itself, and since 2016 there has also been its own dry gin.
The whisky is distilled twice in the copper pot still, after temperature-controlled fermentation of more than seventy-two hours. Several texts from the producer mention a collaboration with a Frisian brewery; which one it is and how the roles are divided is not stated.
Well over a hundred and thirty years of genever, and only then whisky.
What to look out for
Both bottles are seven years old; the difference lies in the release, not the age.
The bottles are numbered and the editions are limited to what was put on cask at the time.
