Why here

Why that little cask does so much

A regular sherry butt holds five hundred litres. An octave holds fifty. The ratio of wood surface to contents is therefore much greater, and so the cask works much faster. In a quarter, more happens than in years in a large butt.

That is the whole concept. An existing single malt matured in ex-bourbon casks is taken and spends at least three months in a specially coopered small sherry cask, oloroso or Pedro Ximénez. The result is dark, full and pronounced.

About the bottler

Started as an experiment

  • The brand in brief
  • 2014Darkness appears for the first time.
  • 2019Relaunch as a permanent brand.
  • TonbridgeWhere the bottler is based, in Kent.
  • OctaveThe fifty-litre cask.

Darkness began in 2014 as an experiment by an English online whisky shop: twelve whiskies from ten distilleries, all for a little over three months in specially made small sherry casks. It was meant as a one-off series.

In 2019 it became a full brand with a fixed eight-year-old Speyside single malt, at just over forty-seven percent and not chill-filtered. Which distillery it comes from is not disclosed.

Alongside that, a stream of separate releases keeps appearing, on which the distillery name and the age do appear on the label. These come in small runs and in half-litre bottles.

Fifty litres instead of five hundred, and that saves years.

Practical

What these bottles go with

For those who like a pronounced sherry whisky. It is not meant to be subtle, and that is the point.

The individual releases are small runs with a name and an age; what is gone does not come back.

Frequently asked questions about Darkness

How many Darkness does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Three bottles.

Is Darkness a distillery?

No. It is a brand of an English independent bottler from Kent.

What is an octave?

A small sherry cask of about fifty litres. Because the ratio of wood surface to volume is much greater than in an ordinary butt, the cask works much faster.

How long does the whisky stay in there?

At least three months. That is enough to noticeably deepen the colour and sherry character.

Which distillery is in the standard eight-year-old?

That is not disclosed; it only says Speyside. On the individual releases, the distillery name is given.

Can I collect these bottles in Bathmen?
