About that sheep dung
First, let us clear up the misunderstanding: the dung is not in the whisky. It is the fuel used to smoke the malt, just as peat is in Scotland. Iceland has no peat fields and hardly any trees, but a great many sheep, and for centuries dried sheep dung was the fuel used there to heat homes and smoke meat.
It gives a dry, ashy smoke unlike anything else. It is no trick: it is the only source of smoke the island itself produces.
The bottles we have in stock
Check the label: besides the three-year-old single malt there is also Young Malt, and that is formally not yet whisky.

Barley that hardly wants to grow in Iceland
- The company in brief
- 2009Founded by the Thorkelsson brothers.
- 163Trial distillations before the recipe was right.
- 2014The first Young Malt.
- 2017The first real three-year-old single malt.
Eimverk is in Gardabaer, just outside Reykjavik, and was set up in 2009 by the Thorkelsson brothers. It took one hundred and sixty-three trial distillations before they were satisfied. The first Young Malt came in 2014, the first three-year-old single malt in 2017.
The barley comes entirely from Iceland and grows there with difficulty: the summer is cool, there is a lot of rain and the starch content is lower than in Scottish barley. About half as much barley again is needed per litre. Some of the casks are maturing under the volcano Hekla.
Besides the smoked version there is a finish in casks of Icelandic birch: three years in American oak and then three months in birch. Here too: the island has little, so they work with what it does have. The brand name refers to Hrafna-Flóki, the Norse seafarer who gave Iceland its name.
No peat, no trees, but sheep.
What these bottles go with
The smoked version is a good introduction to smoke that does not come from peat. Drier and more ashy than Islay, and less medicinal.
Young Malt is younger than three years and may therefore not be called whisky. Fine for tasting what it all starts with, but do not expect a single malt from it.

Frequently asked questions about Flóki
How many Flóki does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Four bottles.
Is there really sheep dung in it?
No. Dried sheep dung is the fuel with which the malt is smoked, just as peat is in Scotland. Iceland has no peat and almost no trees.
Who makes Flóki?
Eimverk Distillery in Gardabaer, just outside Reykjavik, founded in 2009 by the Thorkelsson brothers. It is the first whisky distillery in Iceland.
Where does the barley come from?
Entirely from Iceland. It contains less starch than Scottish barley, which means about half as much again is needed per litre.
What is Young Malt?
Distillate that has not yet spent three years in cask and therefore formally may not be called whisky.
