Five Tales and four unusual casks
The Tale series is where Glenmorangie can put its experiments: A Tale of the Forest with malt dried over forest plants instead of peat, A Tale of Tokyo with mizunara oak, and three others. We have five, plus the bottle the house made with Harrison Ford.
Also four finishes you will not find like this anywhere else: palo cortado, calvados, cognac and sweet wine. And six bottles from the Private Editions, including Allta with wild yeast from the distillery’s own barley field. If you are not sure which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Glenmorangie lies near Tain on the Dornoch Firth, in the northern Highlands. The distillery began in 1843 in a converted brewery. The name is pronounced with the stress on the second syllable: glen-MOR-an-gie, rhyming with ‘orangey’.
The technical hallmark is the stills: well over five metres tall, the tallest in Scotland. They were bought second-hand and originally meant for gin. Because of that height only the very lightest vapours reach the top; the heavier ones fall back. That gives the floral, fruity style the house is known for.
What Glenmorangie has mainly changed is the thinking about casks. In the 1990s the house began systematically with what is now called ‘finishing’: whisky that first ages for years in bourbon casks and then spends another period in sherry, port or wine. Lasanta and Quinta Ruban come out of that. Today almost every distillery does it, but this is where it began.
The house buys its own American oak, lets it dry in the open air for two years and uses each cask only twice.
What exactly is a cask finish?
The whisky first matures for years in one type of cask and then spends another period (usually one to two years) in a second cask. That second cask adds a layer of flavour on top of the base without overpowering it. Too long, and the wood takes over the whisky; too short, and you taste nothing of it. This fine-tuning was developed here.
About Glenmorangie
Glenmorangie is in Tain, in the Scottish Highlands, and has been distilling whisky since 1843. In that year William Matheson converted the brewery on the Morangie farm into a distillery, with two second-hand gin stills.
Characteristic are the stills: at 8 metres high they are the tallest stills in Scotland. The water comes from the Tarlogie Springs in the hills above the distillery. For decades the distilling was done by a fixed crew of sixteen men, the Sixteen Men of Tain.
Glenmorangie makes only single malt whisky. The basis of the range is The Original. Glenmorangie is also known for extra maturation: part of the whisky moves to a second cask for a period after the first maturation. Lasanta thus receives extra maturation in oloroso sherry casks, Quinta Ruban in port casks and Nectar d'Or in casks that have held Sauternes.
Since 2004 Glenmorangie has been owned by the French luxury group LVMH. The distillery in Tain welcomes visitors for tours.

Frequently asked questions about Glenmorangie
How much Glenmorangie does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Thirty bottles, all available immediately: eight from the core range, six from the Tale series, four special cask finishes, six Private Editions and six at the top end.
How do you pronounce Glenmorangie?
With the stress on the second syllable: glen-MOR-an-gie, rhyming with the English ‘orangey’. Not on the last syllable.
Why is Glenmorangie so light and floral?
Through the stills. They stand well over five metres tall (the tallest in Scotland), so only the very lightest vapours reach the top and the heavier ones fall back.
What is a cask finish?
Whisky that first matures for years in one type of cask and then spends a further period in a second cask, for example sherry or port. Glenmorangie was the first to start doing this systematically in the nineties; Lasanta and Quinta Ruban came out of that.
Which Glenmorangie is best to try first?
The 10 Years Old, also known as The Original. If you want to know right away what a finish does, put the Lasanta or Quinta Ruban next to it. For those who want to compare without buying whole bottles, there is a tasting pack with four small bottles.
What is the Tale range?
A series in which something unusual is tried each time: A Tale of the Forest with malt dried over forest plants, A Tale of Tokyo with mizunara oak, and so on. We have five of them.
Does ’t Bockje also ship Glenmorangie abroad?
Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
