Why here

Whisky from a cognac house

Heriose comes from Angeac-Champagne, in the middle of the cognac region. Maison Boinaud distils cognac there and uses the same copper alambics charentais for this whisky. So the distillate is not bought in but made in-house.

The barley is entirely French. What really sets the range apart is the finishing: alongside a classic and a peated version, there is one that has spent time in casks of pineau des charentes, the aperitif from the same region.

A classic one, a peated one and one with a finish from the local region.

About the region

Whisky in cognac country

  • The brand in brief
  • BoinaudThe house behind Heriose.
  • Angeac-ChampagneIn the Charente, the cognac region.
  • AlambicThe copper cognac still.
  • PineauThe local cask for the finish.

Angeac-Champagne lies in the Charente, the heart of the cognac region. Anyone with a distillery there has copper alambics charentais: small stills in which cognac is distilled in two runs.

That a cognac house makes whisky is less strange than it sounds. Cognac distillation is tied to a season and runs from the harvest until the end of March at the latest. What happens to the same stills during the rest of the year differs per house.

The range is small. Le Classique is the basis, Le Petit Tourbé is the peated version, and the Pineau des Charentes Cask Finish is finished on casks of the regional aperitif made from unfermented grape must and cognac.

The same copper stills as for the cognac, only not grapes but barley.
