Calvados on the label, whisky in the glass
Château du Breuil is the name of the estate and of the calvados. The whisky is called Le Breuil. On the bottles we stock, you will see both names mixed together, which looks confusing but concerns the same house.
The distillate is distilled on the estate itself, in two copper alambics charentais, the still model from the cognac and calvados tradition. That is a different still from the Scottish pot still and you notice it in the set-up: not a copy of Scotland, but the Normandy way of working applied to malted barley.
The bottles we have in stock
The range is easy to grasp: Origine is about the grain, the Élégance collection about the wood.

A castle in the Pays d’Auge
- The house in brief
- The fiftiesThe estate begins with calvados.
- 2017The first whisky distillate.
- 2020New owner.
- 2021The first single malts, at 46%.
The castle dates from the early sixteenth century and was used as a mill and factory in the nineteenth century. Calvados arrived in the mid-1950s. In 2020 the estate got a new owner, Frédéric Dussart, and since 2021 the company has been called La Spiriterie Française. The chef de cave is Philippe Etignard.
For the barley, old varieties are chosen, with Golden Promise as its signature. They yield less and cost more, and that is exactly the point: the house wants the grain to be tasted. Origine is the young entry-level bottling, mainly from first fill bourbon casks with a touch of new French oak.
The Élégance collection is about cask finishing: oloroso, Pedro Ximénez and a peated version on casks that previously held Islay whisky. In addition there is a single cask on Palo Cortado from Jerez, and a blended malt that brings Le Breuil together with the single malt of a second French house from the cognac region.
Not imitating Scotland, but the Normandy recipe applied to barley.
What these bottles go with
Interesting for those who know calvados and want to know what the same house does with barley, and for those who want to try French whisky without ending up in the sweet corner.
Putting the young Origine next to a bottle from the Élégance collection shows well what the cask adds.
