A blended malt is not a blend
The distinction matters. A regular blend consists of malt whisky and grain whisky. A blended malt contains only malt whisky, from several distilleries. The Journey range is the latter, which explains why these bottles have more body than a blend in the same price class.
Each bottle stands for one region: the Highlands, Islay, the Hebrides or Campbeltown. Which distilleries go into it is not disclosed, and there are no ages on it either. What you buy is the character of a region, not that of a single house.

A family that split itself in two
- The company in brief
- 2013Hunter Laing came into being after the split of Douglas Laing.
- 2016Land acquired on Islay.
- 2018The first cask of Ardnahoe filled, in November.
- 2024Ardnahoe’s first own single malt.
In 2013 the brothers Stewart and Fred Laing divided the assets of Douglas Laing and went their separate ways. Stewart started the company Hunter Laing with his sons Andrew and Scott, with its office in Glasgow and the bottling plant in East Kilbride. Fred stayed with Douglas Laing.
The Journey series is the everyday side of that company: not expensive single casks but accessible blended malts, all four at forty-six percent and in small batches. Highland Journey was the first; Islay Journey reached the market in January 2019.
By now Hunter Laing also has its own distillery. In 2016 a site on Islay was acquired, in November 2018 the first cask of Ardnahoe was filled, and in May 2024 its first own single malt was released.
Not a distillery name, but the character of a region.
What these bottles go with
A pleasant way to get to know the Scottish regions side by side without buying four expensive bottles.
Put the Islay next to the Hebridean; that difference in smoke is more instructive than any explanation.
