Why here

A bottler who built his own distillery

Ardnahoe belongs to the Laing family, who with Hunter Laing have been bottling other people’s casks for decades. After three generations of bottling they decided to build one of their own, on Islay, with a view across the Sound of Islay to Jura. The stills started running in October 2018; it took until May 2024 before whisky went into the bottle.

That means the whole offering still consists of a handful of bottles. We have all four, including the Inaugural Release and a one-off Chairman’s Selection at well over 60 percent. Over the years this will become the bottle people say they should have bought. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

  • The distillery in five moments
  • 2013The Laing family starts Hunter Laing as a bottler.
  • 2015They buy a plot of land at Loch Ardnahoe on Islay.
  • 2018The first spirit runs in October, and the first cask is sealed in November.
  • 2019The visitor centre opens; Islay gains a ninth distillery.
  • 2024In May the first whisky appears, five years old.

Ardnahoe sits on the north-east coast of Islay, between Bunnahabhain and Caol Ila, beside the loch it is named after. Stewart Laing first came to the island in the 1960s to learn the trade; fifty years later he bought a four-acre plot there with his sons Andrew and Scott. The first spirit ran in October 2018, the first cask was filled in November and the visitor centre opened in April 2019. It was the first new distillery on Islay since Kilchoman in 2005.

Ardnahoe deliberately takes a different technical route. The vapour is cooled in two old-fashioned worm tubs (copper coils in a tank of water), the only ones on the island. This cools more slowly than the modern method and gives a fuller, oilier whisky. Add to that the longest lyne arms in Scotland and a fermentation of sixty to seventy hours. The barley comes from Port Ellen Maltings and is peated to 40 ppm.

A worm tub almost three metres high with tens of metres of copper coil inside. Slower, less efficient, and chosen for exactly that reason.

Frequently asked questions about Ardnahoe

How much Ardnahoe does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Four bottles, and that is just about everything the distillery has released so far. Ardnahoe has only existed since 2018 and released its first whisky in 2024.

Which Ardnahoe is best to try first?

The Infinite Loch or the Bholsa from the core range. The Inaugural Release is mainly interesting if you want the first bottling of a young distillery; in terms of flavor, the core range serves you just as well.

Why is Ardnahoe only five or six years old?

Because nothing is older. The first casks were filled in November 2018, so the oldest whisky that exists is a few years old. That is not a shortcoming but a fact of life for a new distillery.

What is a worm tub and why is it special?

A copper coil in a tub of cold water, in which the vapour turns liquid again. It is the old-fashioned method: slower than modern condensers, but it gives a fuller, oilier whisky. Ardnahoe has the only worm tubs on Islay.

How peated is Ardnahoe?

The barley is peated to around 40 ppm, comparable to the more robust Islay whiskies. The Chairman’s Selection is the most heavily peated bottling to date.

Verstuurt ’t Bockje Ardnahoe ook naar het buitenland?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
