About the distillery

Stills almost eight meters tall

  • Jura in five facts
  • 1810Archibald Campbell founds the distillery.
  • 1901the old distillery closes.
  • 1963after rebuilding, production gets going again.
  • 7,7 mthe height of the lantern-shaped stills.
  • 54 hoursthe length of the fermentation, short by Scottish standards.

Jura lies in the Inner Hebrides, between Islay and the mainland. The distillery was founded in 1810 by Archibald Campbell, the laird of the island. It fell silent in 1901; only after a rebuild did production resume in 1963, partly to keep people on the island.

What makes Jura technically special are the stills. They are lantern-shaped and, at about seven metres seventy, exceptionally tall. The taller the still, the more the heavier parts fall back and the lighter the spirit that comes out. Fermentation takes about fifty-four hours, which is short.

Since 2014 the distillery has been owned by Emperador Distillers from the Philippines. The range runs from the light, unpeated bottles to editions that incorporate peated whisky.

Tall stills give a light spirit, and on Jura they are almost eight metres high.

Cask finishes and vintages
