Why here

Sixteen times the same distillery, sixteen times different

Ledaig is one of those names bottlers like to work with: heavily peated, and recognisable even when young. We have sixteen, from a three-year-old Adelphi to a twenty-eight-year-old Gordon & MacPhail.

In addition the four official bottles, including the Triple Wood and a Rioja cask finish. If you do not know which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

From the distillery itself

Four bottles, from the permanent ten-year-old to an eighteen-year-old.

About the distillery

The peated side of Tobermory

  • Ledaig in five facts
  • 1798John Sinclair founds the distillery under the name Ledaig.
  • LedaigGaelic for safe harbour, after the sheltered fishing harbour.
  • 42 yearsthe distillery was idle between 1930 and 1972.
  • 30-40ppm peat in the malt.
  • 2007Ledaig is released again as a separate brand.

Ledaig is not a distillery of its own but the peated whisky of Tobermory, the only distillery on the island of Mull. It was founded in 1798 by John Sinclair, under exactly that name: Ledaig, Gaelic for safe haven, after the sheltered fishing harbour of the village.

Its history is one of long silences. The distillery stood idle for forty-two years between 1930 and 1972, and in the 1980s it closed for a time as well. In 2007 Ledaig was relaunched as a separate brand, alongside the unpeated Tobermory.

The malt for Ledaig is at thirty to forty ppm. That is hefty, but the smoke is different from that of Islay: less iodine, more earth and rubber. Precisely because the character is so pronounced, you see a lot of Ledaig from independent bottlers.

Ledaig was the distillery's first name, and is now the name of its smoke.

Frequently asked questions about Ledaig

How much Ledaig does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Sixteen different bottles: four from the distillery itself and twelve from independent bottlers. All sixteen are currently available.

What is the difference between Ledaig and Tobermory?

It is the same distillery on Mull. Tobermory is the unpeated whisky, Ledaig the peated one. The malt for Ledaig is at thirty to forty ppm.

What does Ledaig mean?

Safe harbour, in Gaelic. The name refers to the sheltered fishing harbour of Tobermory and was also the original name of the distillery.

How old is the distillery?

It was founded in 1798 by John Sinclair. It did lie idle for long periods: between 1930 and 1972 for forty-two years in a row, and also for a number of years in the 1980s.

Does Ledaig taste like an Islay whisky?

Not quite. The smoke is there, but different: less iodine and seaweed than on Islay, more earth and rubber.
