Why here

Six vintages of Special Release in a row

The sixteen-year-old is everywhere. What you rarely see together are the twelve-year-old Special Releases from 2020 up to and including 2024, plus the newest Grain & Embers. Six vintages of the same bottle, each year slightly different.

There is also an Offerman edition on rum casks, the eight-year-old anniversary bottle, a Feis Ile 2025 and the Game of Thrones edition. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

The slowest stills of Islay

  • Lagavulin in five facts
  • 1816John Johnston starts out; illegal distilling had been going on at this spot for much longer.
  • 5 hourstakes a run through the wash still.
  • 9 hourstakes one run through the spirit still: the slowest on the island.
  • Pear-shapedthe stills, with a narrow, steeply sloping swan neck.
  • 43%the bottling strength of the core sixteen-year-old.

Lagavulin lies on the south coast of Islay, between Laphroaig and Ardbeg. The distillery officially dates from 1816, when John Johnston began here; illegal distilling had been going on in the same bay long before that.

What sets Lagavulin apart is the pace. A run through the wash still takes about five hours, through the spirit still more than nine. That is the slowest distillation on Islay and one of the slowest in Scotland. The stills are pear-shaped, with a round bottom and a narrow, steeply sloping swan neck.

The sixteen-year-old is the core bottle and was part of the original Classic Malts. The Distillers Edition is finished on pedro ximenez casks. In addition, a Special Release appears every year; we have six lined up.

Nine hours per run: that is where the body of Lagavulin comes from.

Frequently asked questions about Lagavulin

How many Lagavulin does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Seventeen different bottles, including six Special Releases in a row. All seventeen are available at the moment.

Why does Lagavulin distil so slowly?

Because the distillery does so deliberately. A run through the wash still takes about five hours and through the spirit still well over nine. That is the slowest on Islay and gives the thick, smoky style Lagavulin is known for.

What is the Distillers Edition?

An annual release that, after the regular maturation, is finished on Pedro Ximénez sherry casks.

What are the Special Releases?

An annual limited edition from Diageo, at Lagavulin usually a twelve-year-old at cask strength with its own name each year. We have the vintages from 2020 up to and including the latest.

What is the Offerman Edition?

A series that Lagavulin releases together with actor Nick Offerman. Ours is an eleven-year-old finished on Caribbean rum casks.
