Why here

Six bottles aged twenty-one years and older

Tobermory is a small distillery that releases little itself, and it is precisely the older bottlings that are hard to find. We have six of twenty-one years and older, all with a sherry finish: 21, 21, 23, 24, 25 and 26 years. You rarely see a line-up like that together.

About the distillery

Two names, one distillery on Mull

  • Tobermory in four moments
  • 1798John Sinclair builds the distillery, under the name Ledaig.
  • 1837Production comes to a standstill for the first time.
  • 1930sDe distilleerderij sluit opnieuw.
  • 1989After years of standing idle, it opens again.

Tobermory stands in the village of the same name on the north side of the island of Mull, at the head of the bay and against a steep slope. John Sinclair built it in 1798; he had come to the village as a trader in soda made from burnt seaweed. It is still the only distillery on the island.

The distillery has stood idle more often than it has run. Production stopped around 1837, it closed again in the 1930s, and only in 1989 did whisky leave the site again. That explains why old vintages are so thinly spread, and why a row of six bottles aged twenty-one years and older is special.

Ongeturfd heet het Tobermory, geturfd heet het Ledaig. Dezelfde distilleerderij, dezelfde ketels.

Frequently asked questions about Tobermory

How much Tobermory does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Fourteen different bottles, of which six are twenty-one years or older and four are from independent bottlers. All fourteen are currently available.

What is the difference between Tobermory and Ledaig?

The same distillery. Tobermory is the unpeated whisky, Ledaig the peated one. Ledaig was originally the name of the distillery itself; that name is now used for the smoked version.

Waar staat Tobermory?

In the village of Tobermory on the north side of the island of Mull, at the head of the bay. It is the only whisky distillery on the island.

How old is the distillery?

It was built in 1798 by John Sinclair. In the centuries since, it has been shut down several times: around 1837, in the 1930s and again afterwards. It only reopened in 1989.

Why are old Tobermorys so scarce?

Because the distillery has been closed for long periods and is small. So there is little old stock. That is why a row of six bottles aged twenty-one years and older on one shelf is unusual.
