Why here

Six bottles from the oldest mention

Lindores Abbey is a young distillery with a very old address. We have six bottles: the first release MCDXCIV, two cask releases and three single casks at full strength.

Two of them come from the Friar John Cor series, named after the monk in the 1494 record. If you are not sure which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

The address from 1494

  • Lindores in five facts
  • 1494the oldest known mention of aqua vitae in Scotland.
  • Friar John Corthe monk mentioned in that entry.
  • 2017the distillery opens, set up by Drew and Helen McKenzie Smith.
  • 2021the first own single malt, MCDXCIV.
  • Newburghin Fife, on the Firth of Tay.

The Scottish Exchequer Rolls of 1494 contain an order to supply malt to Friar John Cor, to make aqua vitae from it. That is the oldest known written mention of distilled spirits in Scotland, and that mention points to Lindores Abbey near Newburgh in Fife.

The abbey now lies in ruins. Next to the ruin, Drew and Helen McKenzie Smith built a distillery, which opened in 2017. In 2021 the first own single malt appeared under the name MCDXCIV (1494 in Roman numerals).

Besides whisky, Lindores makes an Aqua Vitae, a spiced distillate that harks back to what will have been made in 1494. The Friar John Cor series appears in numbered chapters at full strength.

An eight-year-old distillery at an address more than five hundred years old.

Single casks

Three bottles at full strength, including two chapters of Friar John Cor.
