Why here

A distillery you mostly get to know through bottlers

Only a handful of official bottlings of Mannochmore exist. Most of the production disappears into blends. What is available as a single malt comes from bottlers, and we have those: fifteen different casks.

Among them are four Claxton’s, two Finn Thomsons and names you rarely see such as Tri Carragh, Spencer Collings and The Electric Coo. Not sure which one to pick? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

From the distillery itself

Two bottles: the regular twelve-year-old and a Managers Choice from 2009.

About the distillery

Taking turns with the neighbours

  • Mannochmore in five facts
  • 1971built on the grounds of Glenlossie.
  • Bardon Burnthe stream from which both distilleries draw their water.
  • 1992the twelve-year-old appears in the Flora & Fauna series.
  • 1996Loch Dhu is released: a pitch-black whisky.
  • 1999Loch Dhu disappears from the market again.

Mannochmore was built in 1971 on the site of Glenlossie, on Glenlossie Road near Elgin. The two distilleries share the water from the Bardon Burn and for a long time were run by the same crew, who worked at each in turn, a year at a time. The style is lighter than that of its neighbours, without the oily base of Glenlossie.

The distillery was built for the blends and has largely remained that way. The first official single malt only came in 1992, as a twelve-year-old in the Flora & Fauna series. Since 1997 Mannochmore has belonged to Diageo.

The distillery became famous for a bottle that no longer exists: Loch Dhu, a ten-year-old that appeared in the second half of the nineties and was so dark that it looked almost black in the glass. That colour came from heavily charred casks plus a generous dose of colouring. In 1999 it disappeared from the market; among collectors it is still a household name.

Known for a bottle that has not been made for more than twenty-five years.

Frequently asked questions about Mannochmore

How many Mannochmore does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Seventeen different bottles: two from the distillery itself and fifteen from independent bottlers. All seventeen are available right now.

Where is Mannochmore located?

On Glenlossie Road near Elgin in Speyside, on the grounds of the Glenlossie distillery. Both draw their water from the Bardon Burn.

Why is Mannochmore rare as a single malt?

Because the distillery was built for the blends in 1971 and that has largely remained so. The first official single malt only came in 1992.

What was Loch Dhu?

A ten-year-old Mannochmore from the second half of the 1990s that was so dark it looked almost black, due to heavily charred casks and added colouring. It disappeared from the market in 1999.

What is the Flora & Fauna series?

A series of official bottlings from distilleries that normally supply only for blends. Each label shows an animal or plant from the surrounding area. The twelve-year-old Mannochmore is part of it.
