Why here

Four series you recognise by the bottle

Claxton’s works with four clearly separate ranges, which makes choosing easy. Exploration is about young casks, always at exactly 50 percent and usually between 60 and 95 euros. Warehouse No.1 and No.8 are the cask-strength flagships. No.8 comes from small casks, often only sixty to seventy bottles per release. Dalswinton is the top end: old casks of thirty years and older.

With one hundred and five bottles, this is the largest range from a single bottler that we carry after Signatory. This page shows a selection of forty-four; you will find the rest in the online shop. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the house

A family business with its own warehouse

  • The house in four moments
  • 2011Adrian and Jack Hoose set up Claxton’s in Yorkshire.
  • 2015The first bottles appear, cask by cask.
  • 2019The company moves into Sandbed House on the Dalswinton estate.
  • nowEverything there is bottled by hand.

Claxton’s is a family business from Yorkshire, founded in 2011 by Adrian and Jack Hoose. The first four years went on finding and following casks; the first bottles only came in 2015. It stayed small: one cask at a time.

In 2019 demand was so high that the company needed a warehouse of its own. That became Sandbed House on the Dalswinton estate in Dumfries and Galloway, on the River Nith. The casks now lie there, in a combination of old-fashioned dunnage storage and racking, and everything is bottled by hand there too.

The starting point is always the same: one cask per bottling, no colouring, no chill filtration, and only bottling once the balance between wood and spirit is right, however long that takes.

Warehouse No.8 owes its name to the octaves: small casks of around fifty liters. Sometimes only sixty bottles come out of them.

Why does the label sometimes show only a region?

Because not every distillery allows its name to appear on someone else’s bottle. In that case the bottler puts the region on it: Islay, Speyside, Campbeltown, Orkney. So you know where the whisky comes from, but not which distillery. We do not guess at that; it comes with this kind of bottle.

Warehouse No.1: eleven casks at cask strength

From a four-year-old Holyrood to three casks of around twenty-seven years.

Seven outside the ranges

Frequently asked questions about Claxton’s

How many Claxton’s does ’t Bockje have in stock?

One hundred and five bottlings. After Signatory, that is the largest range from a single bottler in our shop. This page shows a selection of forty-four; you will find the rest in the Online shop.

What is the difference between the series?

Exploration is about young casks at exactly 50 percent, mostly between 60 and 95 euros. Warehouse No.1 and No.8 are the flagships at cask strength; No.8 comes from small casks with sometimes only sixty bottles per release. Dalswinton is the top end: old casks of thirty years and older.

Why do some bottles not list a distillery?

Because not every distillery allows its name to appear on a bottler’s bottle. Then only the region is named, for example Islay or Speyside. Which distillery is behind it, we do not say.

Who is behind Claxton’s?

A family business from Yorkshire, founded in 2011 by Adrian and Jack Hoose. Since 2019 they have been maturing and bottling on the Dalswinton estate in Dumfries and Galloway.

Which Claxton’s should you try first?

One from the Exploration Series. They are all bottled at 50 percent, so you can taste the distillery properly without the strength getting in the way, and they are affordable for a single cask.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Claxton’s abroad?

Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
