Why here

The whole age range, plus two single casks

At most shops, Old Pulteney means the twelve-year-old. We have the twelve, thirteen, fifteen and eighteen standing side by side, with a twenty-five-year-old above them.

Also two bottles from the Coastal Series, the Huddart, a single cask from 2012 and a bottling by Hart Brothers. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That's what we're here for.

The age series

Four bottles with an age statement on the label.

About the distillery

Whisky from a herring town

  • Old Pulteney in five facts
  • 1826James Henderson founds the distillery in Pulteneytown.
  • Around 1910two thousand ships worked out of the port of Wick.
  • 1930the parish introduces prohibition; the distillery closes.
  • 1951distilling has started again; the town was wet again in 1947.
  • 1995Inver House Distillers becomes the owner.

Old Pulteney stands in Pulteneytown, a district of the Caithness town of Wick that was laid out at the start of the nineteenth century for the herring fishery. James Henderson founded the distillery there in 1826. Barley came in by sea and whisky went out by sea again; many workers were also fishermen.

The herring brought prosperity but also drink. In 1930 the parish introduced prohibition and the distillery closed. Wick stayed dry until 1947; only in 1951 was there distilling again. Since 1995 Inver House Distillers has been the owner.

The stills are unusual. The wash still has a large bulge at the bottom and above it a truncated, flat head, a shape you see at few other distilleries in Scotland. Condensing is done in worm tubs. Both contribute to the thicker, salty style that the house calls the maritime malt.

A flat still head and worm tubs: that is where the briny, heavy style begins.

Frequently asked questions about Old Pulteney

How many Old Pulteney does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Ten different bottles, from twelve to twenty-five years old. All ten are available at the moment.

Where is Old Pulteney?

In Pulteneytown, a district of Wick in Caithness, in the far north-east of Scotland. James Henderson founded the distillery there in 1826.

Why is it called the maritime malt?

Because of its location in a herring town and the salty style. Barley came in by sea and the whisky left by sea again; many employees were also fishermen.

Why was the distillery silent for twenty years?

Because the parish introduced prohibition in 1930. Wick stayed dry until 1947; in 1951 distilling resumed.

What is special about the stills?

The wash still has a large bulge at the bottom and a truncated, flat head. You will find that shape at few other distilleries in Scotland. Condensing is also done in worm tubs.
