Why here

Nine Special Releases side by side

The 10 Years and the Storm are everywhere. What you rarely see together are the Special Releases: the annual cask-strength bottlings that Diageo releases in limited numbers and which do not come back afterwards. We have nine on the shelf, from the 8 Years of 2020 to the 14 Years Molten Seas.

In addition there are two 25-year-olds, two 30-year-olds, an 18 Years, and the Glacial Edge of forty-five years. If you are not sure which one to get, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Talisker was founded in 1830 by the brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, who raised three thousand pounds for it; a year later the distillery opened in Carbost. The name does not come from the village but from the MacAskill estate, some eight kilometres further west. At its peak Skye had seven registered distilleries; Talisker is the only one still there.

In 1960 the still house burned down completely. During the rebuilding, five exact copies of the original stills were made to prevent the flavour from changing. Those five are still there: two wash stills and three spirit stills.

What technically sets Talisker apart is the worm tubs. Instead of a modern condenser, the vapour cools in a long copper coil in a tank of water. That gives less contact with copper and so a heavier, meatier distillate. The water comes from Cnoc nan Speireag, the Hawk Hill, and runs through peat on its way to the distillery.

After the fire of 1960, five exact copies of the old stills were built so as not to lose the flavour.

The Special Releases

Nine bottlings from the annual series, almost all at cask strength. One release each year, then it is gone.

Frequently asked questions about Talisker

How much Talisker does ’t Bockje have in stock?

Twenty-four different bottles, including nine Special Releases, two 25-year-olds and two 30-year-olds. All twenty-four are currently available. The current stock is shown in the online shop.

Where does Talisker come from?

From Carbost on Loch Harport, on the Isle of Skye. The distillery was founded in 1830 by the brothers Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill and opened a year later.

What are worm tubs?

An old-fashioned way of condensing: the vapour cools in a long copper coil sitting in a tub of water, instead of in a modern condenser. This gives less copper contact and a heavier, meatier distillate.

What is a Special Release?

A bottling that Diageo releases once a year in limited numbers, usually at cask strength and often with its own name. Once the run is gone, it does not return. We have nine in stock.

Is Talisker peated?

Yes, light to medium. The water also runs through peat on its way to the distillery. The smoke is present but less pronounced than in the heaviest Islay malts.

Can I reserve a bottle and collect it in Bathmen?

That is possible. Order online and choose pickup, or call us on 0570 541 278 and we will set it aside. Pickup at Brink 2 is free.
