Why here

The permanent twelve-year-old and a rare sixteen

You usually only see Royal Lochnagar as the twelve-year-old at forty percent. The sixteen-year-old at cask strength is a very different story: almost fifty-eight percent, and from a distillery that makes little each year.

Two bottles that stand well next to each other: the same origin, a completely different weight. If you don’t know which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

About the distillery

Neighbours of Balmoral

  • Royal Lochnagar in five facts
  • 1845John Begg builds the distillery as it still stands today.
  • 1848Queen Victoria and Prince Albert come to visit; the warrant follows.
  • 2stills: one wash still and one spirit still.
  • 1997the distillery goes to Diageo.
  • 2022the fifth royal warrant, under King Charles III.

Royal Lochnagar is on Deeside in the Highlands, right next to the Balmoral estate. John Begg built the distillery in 1845. When Queen Victoria and Prince Albert came to have a look in 1848, the royal warrant followed and the word Royal was put before the name.

It is the smallest distillery owned by Diageo: one wash still and one spirit still, nothing more. It has belonged to Diageo since 1997. In 2022 the house received its fifth warrant under King Charles III.

Part of the whisky goes into the bottle as single malt, part disappears into blends such as Johnnie Walker Black Label and Blue Label. That explains why you rarely come across Royal Lochnagar in the shop other than the twelve-year-old.

Diageo's smallest distillery, with Balmoral as its neighbour.
