Two different houses in the same town
Kyoto is home to two companies with confusingly similar names. The Kyoto Distillery makes the gin Ki No Bi. This whisky comes from Kyoto Shuzo, with the Kyoto Miyako Distillery. They have nothing to do with each other.
That difference is more than a detail. The first bottles of The Kyoto appeared in March 2021, about eight months after the house received its licence. Whisky needs more time than that, so this series cannot be its own distillate. What is in it is not specified.
The bottles we have in stock
Aka, kuro and murasaki: the red, the black and the purple obi.
An obi around the bottle
- The brand in brief
- Kyoto ShuzoThe house behind the series.
- MiyakoThe name of the distillery.
- March 2021The first edition.
- Nishijin-oriThe woven brocade on the label.
An obi is the wide band tied around a kimono. The names of the three versions refer to its colour: aka is red, kuro is black and murasaki is purple.
The label is not printed paper but genuine Nishijin-ori: woven brocade from the Nishijin district of Kyoto, where that weaving technique originates.
There is less to say about the contents than about the packaging. No distillery is named and there is no age statement. We therefore do not state an origin and do not guess at one either.
The label is woven, not printed.
What to look out for
Do not confuse this brand with The Kyoto Distillery, the house behind the gin Ki No Bi. That is a different company.
There is no age statement on the bottles; judge them by what is in the glass.
