Why here

What they drink themselves in Piedmont

Barolo is the famous name, but on weekday evenings in Piemonte it is barbera or dolcetto on the table. These grapes are cheaper, ready to drink straight away and far more approachable.

From this house, all three stand next to the Barolo, so you can get to know the region from bottom to top. If you are not sure which one you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

For weekdays

Three wines around twelve euros

Briefly explained

Barbera, dolcetto and nebbiolo

  • The three grapes of Piemonte
  • BarberaHigh acidity, low tannin: juicy and fresh.
  • DolcettoLittle acidity, a bit more tannin: soft and dark.
  • NebbioloPlenty of both: the Barolo grape.
  • SerralungaA Barolo village known for robust wines.

Piedmont revolves around three red grapes, and they complement each other. Barbera has plenty of acidity but little tannin, which makes it feel fresh and juicy, good with tomato sauce or fatty meat. Dolcetto is exactly the opposite: little acidity, somewhat more tannin, soft and dark in flavour. And nebbiolo has plenty of both, which makes it big but also demanding.

The name dolcetto literally means little sweet one, and that is often confusing: the wine is simply dry. The name refers to the grape, which tastes sweet if you eat it straight from the vine.

The Barolo on this page comes from Serralunga d’Alba, one of the eleven Barolo villages. Serralunga is known for the most robust, most age-worthy style of all.

Dolcetto means little sweet one, but the wine is dry. The name refers to the grape, not to the glass.

The Barolo

From Serralunga d’Alba, from nebbiolo.
