Why here

The largest part of our wine shelf

France is by far the best-represented wine country in our range: more than a quarter of everything we stock comes from there. That is no coincidence: the country has something for every occasion and every budget, from an everyday Pays d’Oc to a Châteauneuf-du-Pape or a champagne for an anniversary.

All the houses are listed below. Not sure which one you need? Give us a call. That is what we are here for.

Briefly explained

Why a French label does not name a grape

  • The major regions and their grapes
  • BordeauxCabernet sauvignon and merlot for red.
  • BurgundyPinot noir for red, chardonnay for white.
  • RhôneSyrah in the north, grenache blends in the south.
  • LoireSauvignon blanc, chenin blanc and cabernet franc.

In France the grape almost never appears on the bottle, and that confuses many people. The reason is that the origin is fixed there: anyone who puts Chablis on a label may only use chardonnay. So the region name tells you which grape is in it, if you know which region goes with which grape.

Hence this short list. If you like Sauvignon Blanc, search for Sancerre or Touraine. Pinot Noir? Bourgogne. Full-bodied red wine with blackcurrant? Bordeaux, or a Cabardès from the Languedoc.

If you still want to keep it simple: the wines from the Languedoc and the Pays d’Oc do often put the grape on the label, because looser rules apply there.

The French regional name is not a fancy trick. It tells you exactly which grape you get.

Frequently asked questions about French wine

How many French wines does ’t Bockje have?

Well over two hundred and sixty, from one hundred and sixty-seven different houses. That makes France our largest wine country.

Why is the grape not on a French label?

Because the origin determines the grape. Anyone who puts Chablis on the bottle may only use chardonnay; the region name therefore tells you which grape is in it.

Which region goes with which grape?

Bordeaux: cabernet and merlot. Bourgogne: pinot noir and chardonnay. Rhône: syrah and grenache. Loire: sauvignon blanc, chenin blanc and cabernet franc.

So where does the grape appear?

For wines from the Languedoc and the Pays d’Oc, where more flexible rules apply.

Is there help with choosing?

Yes. Call 0570 541 278 or email info@bockje.nl and tell us what you are drinking the wine with and roughly what you want to spend.

Does ’t Bockje ship wine abroad?

Yes, to about forty countries. Email us if you would like to know whether your country is included.
