One bottle, and a label that explains what it is
From Al Mercado we have one non-alcoholic bottle: the Brut Blanco 0.0. A sparkling wine from Spain, 75 centilitres, with 0 percent on the label line.
The label says De-Alcoholized Sparkling. That is not a marketing term but a description of the process: first wine, then the alcohol removed. Further down this page it explains what that means in practice.
From the same brand we also stock wine with alcohol. This page is only about the alcohol-free bottle.

De-alcoholized: what literally happens
- This bottle in four facts
- SpainThe country of origin on the label line.
- 75 clThe bottle size.
- 0%The alcohol percentage on the label line.
- 0,5%The legal ceiling for dealcoholised wine.
De-alcoholized means the alcohol has been taken out. That is only possible if it was in there first. So this bottle starts out as ordinary wine, with a fermentation in which yeast converts the sugar from the grape into alcohol.
Only when the wine is finished is the alcohol taken out. In winemaking this is done in three ways. Vacuum distillation lowers the pressure in the tank, so that alcohol evaporates at a low temperature instead of at 78 degrees. Reverse osmosis presses the wine under pressure through a membrane that lets alcohol and water through and holds back colour, sugar and flavour compounds. With the spinning cone column, the wine runs as a thin film over rapidly spinning cones, the aromas are first collected separately and are returned to the wine at the end.
Which of those three was used here, we have not found in any source. We therefore stick to what is stated on the label: Spain, 75 centilitres, sparkling, 0 percent.
De-alcoholized is only possible if the alcohol was in it first.
Why does it say 0.0 and not 0.5?
In the European wine rules, dealcoholised wine is a category of its own with a ceiling of 0.5 percent alcohol. Everything below that falls under it. If it contains more, but less than the regular version of that same wine, it is called partially dealcoholised.
0.0 percent on a bottle therefore does not mean that a different rule applies, but that the producer comes in well below that ceiling. This bottle states 0 percent on the label line.
If you want to know exactly what is on the bottle itself, give us a call. We take it off the shelf and read it out to you.
