Why here

A herbal bottle without alcohol, from Friesland

This page covers only Boomsma’s alcohol-free range. On the alcohol-free shelf, an alcohol-free herbal liqueur is one of the rarer finds: there are plenty of alcohol-free gin and aperitif alternatives, but bitter herbal drinks are thin on the ground.

The Herbal Alcohol Free is a base bottle of 70 centiliters, not a ready-to-drink beverage. Boomsma itself names two ways: ice cold or over ice, or as the base for a mocktail. The distillery's house recipe is 50 milliliters with 150 milliliters of tonic and a sprig of mint.

According to Boomsma, it contains eighteen botanicals, including gentian, fennel, liquorice root and nutmeg.

About the distillery

Started at the foot of the Oldehove

  • The company in four facts
  • 1883Dirk Boomsma opens a shop in colonial goods and spirits in Leeuwarden, with a still house and distillery.
  • 1960Grandson Richard Boomsma moves the company to an industrial estate.
  • 2015Since then there has again been a distillery of its own on that site.
  • 18Botanicals in the Herbal Alcohol Free, including gentian, fennel, liquorice root and nutmeg.

Boomsma Distilleerderij is a family business that has been based in Leeuwarden since 1883. That year Dirk Boomsma moved into a building at the foot of the Oldehove and opened a shop for colonial goods and spirits, with a still house, a brandy distillery and a liqueur distillery alongside. In 1960 the company moved to an industrial estate; since 2015 it has once again had its own distillery there.

The Herbal Alcohol Free is the alcohol-free herbal liqueur from that house. Boomsma uses eighteen botanicals in it and names gentian, fennel, liquorice root and nutmeg among them. These are the same four herbs the distillery names for the alcoholic herbal liqueur made from the family recipe.

What makes the alcohol-free bottle interesting is the place it occupies. A herbal bitter is usually drunk neat and ice-cold, and you can do that here too, with a bottle that contains no alcohol.

Eighteen botanicals, and a bottle you drink neat or dilute yourself.

This is how Boomsma turns it into a mocktail

The house recipe is called Herbal Tonic Spritz: fill a glass generously with ice cubes, pour in 50 milliliters of Herbal Alcohol Free, top up with 150 milliliters of tonic, stir briefly and garnish with a sprig of fresh mint.

Good to know

What is an alcohol-free distillate, actually?

Three different things sit mixed together on the alcohol-free shelf, and that is the question we get most often at the counter.

Drinks that never contain alcohol. The flavour comes from herbs and botanicals that are processed without alcohol as a carrier: distilling on water, or macerating and extracting and then blending those extracts.

Dealcoholised drinks. The other way round: first a regular alcoholic drink, after which the alcohol is removed again by vacuum distillation, reverse osmosis or a spinning cone. This is done mainly with beer and wine.

Ready to drink or dilute yourself. That is a second question, separate from the first. The Herbal Alcohol Free is a base bottle of 70 centilitres that you drink neat or dilute yourself. In the same alcohol-free shelf there are also single-serve bottles that need nothing added.
