A hoppy beer without the alcohol of an IPA
This page is only about the beer from Brouwerij Huyghe that stands on our alcohol-free shelf. This house's regular beers, from Delirium to Floris, are on our beer shelf; this page is not about them.
What we have here is the Paranoia Hazy Hoppy 0.0%: a hazy blonde beer in IPA style, in a 33 centilitre bottle. The name says 0.0, but the brewery states 0.3 per cent alcohol for this version. By Dutch standards that counts as low-alcohol, not alcohol-free.
The regular Paranoia Original Hoppy is 5.6 per cent. So that is a very different beer, even though the label looks similar.

Four generations on the Appelhoek in Melle
- The brewery in four facts
- 1654From this year there is brewing activity on the Appelhoek in Melle.
- 1902Léon Huyghe comes from Poperinge to Melle and starts work there.
- 4eThe generation of the family that now runs the brewery.
- 0,3%What the brewery states for the alcohol-free Paranoia.
Brouwerij Huyghe is in Melle, near Ghent. The brewery can say with certainty that beer has been brewed on the Appelhoek since 1654. In 1902 Léon Huyghe came from Poperinge to Melle and found work at the local brewery; the family has stayed there ever since and is now in its fourth generation.
The house makes a long line of beers, of which Delirium is the best known. Paranoia is the hoppy line: the Original Hoppy at 5.6 per cent and, alongside it, this version with almost no alcohol.
The hops go in at two stages. Citra and Mosaic are added during the cold lagering (dry-hopping), and in the brew kettle the brewer uses three other hops.
0.0 per cent, 0.3 per cent, low-alcohol: where are the limits?
0.0 on a label is not a legal category. The brewer chooses it. The law uses two other words, and with this beer that is exactly the point.
The Dutch decree on reserved designations (Warenwetbesluit gereserveerde aanduidingen) allows the name alcohol-free for no more than 0.1 per cent alcohol. Anything above that up to and including 1.2 per cent is called low-alcohol. At 0.3 per cent, this Paranoia therefore falls into the low-alcohol group.
The Dutch Alcohol Act also draws a line at 0.5 per cent: only above that does a drink count as an alcoholic beverage, measured at 20 degrees. At 0.3 per cent, this bottle stays below it.
If you really want zero, look for a beer whose stated content is also 0.0 per cent. If you want a hoppy beer with almost no alcohol, this is a good candidate.
