About Leffe
The story of Leffe begins at the Abbey of Leffe, Notre-Dame de Leffe, founded in 1152 on the Meuse near Dinant. The Premonstratensians of the abbey were already brewing beer there in the 13th century; a document from 1240 is the oldest evidence.
In 1796 the abbey was dissolved, and in 1809 brewing stopped for good. The beer only returned in 1952, when Abbot Nys worked together with Albert Lootvoet, a brewer in Overijse. The first new Leffe was a brown beer.
In 1977 production moved to the brewery in Mont-Saint-Guibert, via Brouwerij Artois, which later merged into Interbrew and is now called AB InBev. That brewery has since closed; Leffe is now brewed in Leuven. Leffe is thus an abbey beer, not a Trappist beer: the monks do not brew it themselves. The abbey does receive royalties.
In Dinant there is Maison Leffe, a museum about the brand and the abbey that is open to visitors.

What is a tripel?
- On this shelf
- tripel1 beer from this brewery
- blond1 beer from this brewery
A tripel is golden blond, high in alcohol and dry in the finish. The name comes from the abbey breweries and refers to the amount of malt that went into the brew: the more malt, the fuller and stronger the beer. A tripel is usually around eight per cent.
What characterises a good tripel is that you do not taste that strength straight away. There is often a spicy, lightly fruity note from the yeast, and a touch of bitterness that keeps the sweetness in balance.
Do not serve it too cold, around eight degrees, and use a goblet so the aroma has room.
A tripel of eight per cent often drinks more easily than expected. So do not have too many in a row.
