Chapter 01 · Why it is here

What you serve with it is here too

A gin without tonic does not get far, and water belongs with spirits on the table. That is why soft drinks are in the wine and spirits shop: the bottle and what goes with it go home in one bag. Soft drinks are water with sugar or sweetener and flavour, with or without carbonation; mixers, iced tea, fruit juice and energy drinks stand alongside. What is here has never contained alcohol.

Chapter 02 · Mixers

The tonic makes up half the glass

A gin and tonic contains more tonic than gin, so the tonic determines a lot. The bitter note comes from quinine from the bark of the cinchona tree; the amount of sugar determines how severe it comes across. Ginger beer is sharper than ginger ale and belongs in a moscow mule. Pour a mixer down the side of the glass and the carbonation lasts longer.

Chapter 03 · Soft drinks

The large bottles for the table

Cola, Fanta, cassis, 7up and Rivella appear on almost every table. The large bottle is for groups, but loses its fizz faster once opened: keep cool, cap tightly closed. For a party: count on about two decilitres per glass, and almost everyone drinks soft drinks in between too. With a tap or drinks package, soft drinks go faster than expected.

Chapter 04 · Water

Sparkling or still, alongside the glass

At a tasting there is water on the table, and it belongs with a dram at home too. Water rinses the mouth between two glasses. A few drops in a cask-strength whisky release aromas; use still water without a strong mineral taste, at room temperature. Sparkling water suits drinks time and a long drink.

Why here

Soft drinks on the Brink

Tonic, ginger ale, bitter lemon and cola determine how a long drink turns out. That is why they are in the wine and spirits shop.

And the ordinary bottles, for anyone who also wants to put out something non-alcoholic at a party.

A tonic with plenty of quinine and little sweetness puts a botanical gin up front; a sweeter tonic pushes it to the back. The same goes for ginger ale with whisky and bitter lemon with vodka.

Coming to pick up a bottle of gin or vodka? Feel free to ask about the mixer; we are happy to find one to go with it.

A good gin deserves more than just any tonic.
