One gin, three variations
We carry four bottles of The Botanist: the clear gin as intended, and two versions that were subsequently aged in cask. That makes it one of the few gin brands where you can see in one go what wood does to gin.
The gin comes from the same distillery as the whisky of Bruichladdich, which we also stock. If you are unsure which bottle to choose, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

What does a cask do to gin?
Gin normally goes straight from the still into the bottle. If you then leave it on oak for a while, it takes on colour from the cask and the emphasis shifts from the juniper to the wood. The Cask Rested and the 3 Years are the same gin as the regular Botanist, only with that extra step in between.
Gin from a whisky distillery
- The house in brief
- 1881Bruichladdich is built on Loch Indaal.
- 2010The first Botanist is distilled.
- 22Wild Islay herbs, picked by hand.
- Ugly BettyThe converted Lomond still for the gin.
The Botanist comes from Bruichladdich, the distillery on Loch Indaal on Islay. The same house makes the whisky of which we stock a sizeable row of bottles; you will find it on the Bruichladdich page.
The gin is distilled in Ugly Betty, a converted Lomond still that got a second life at the distillery. The distillation takes about seventeen hours, much slower than usual for gin.
Alongside the classic base botanicals go 22 wild herbs picked on Islay itself, including bog myrtle, heather and apple mint. The distillery says it adds no essences, oils or flavourings.
22 botanicals that grow on Islay, picked by hand instead of bought in.
Why ‘the only Islay dry gin’?
Islay is a whisky island: nine out of ten bottles that come from there are single malt. The Botanist is the only dry gin distilled there, and that is exactly what the brand calls itself.
Where best to start
If you are starting with The Botanist, take the standard bottle. That is the recipe the brand is known for and the logical benchmark for the rest.
If you already know that one, the Cask Rested and the 3 Years Islay Cask Aged are the interesting next step: the same gin, but with wood ageing added. They are available in smaller quantities than the regular bottle.
If you are not sure, call 0570 541 278 or drop in at Brink 2 in Bathmen. We will simply get the bottles out for you.

Frequently asked questions about The Botanist
How many bottles of The Botanist does ’t Bockje have in stock?
Four: the regular Botanist in two sizes, the Cask Rested and the 3 Years Islay Cask Aged.
Where is The Botanist made?
At Bruichladdich on Islay, in the west of Scotland. It is the only dry gin distilled on that island.
How many botanicals are in The Botanist?
22 wild botanicals picked on Islay, alongside the classic base botanicals of a dry gin.
What is the difference between the regular Botanist and the Cask Rested?
It is the same gin, but the Cask Rested has afterwards spent at least another six months in cask. That gives it colour and shifts the emphasis towards the wood.
Does Bruichladdich also make whisky?
Yes, and we stock a good number of bottles of it. They are on our Bruichladdich page.
Does ’t Bockje also ship The Botanist abroad?
Yes. We ship to around forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included.
