Why here

One of the broadest Bruichladdich collections in the Netherlands

Bruichladdich distills on Islay in a distillery that has never been radically modernized since 1881. Whatever comes from there, we collect: the bottles found everywhere, and also the individual casks that independent bottlers release in runs of sometimes a hundred and fifty pieces worldwide.

Of some of them we still have exactly one bottle. That is the kind of collection you only build by chasing it for years, and that is why people from all over the country order here. If you are not sure which bottle you need, give us a call. That is what we are here for.

The three ranges

Three names, one distillery

The same stills, the same barley, the same water. The difference lies in how much peat smoke was used when drying the barley.

About the distillery

Built in the Victorian era, never rebuilt

  • The distillery in four moments
  • 1881Built as a modern Victorian distillery on Loch Indaal.
  • The ninetiesProduction comes to a halt. For five years the distillery stands dry.
  • 2001Restarted with Jim McEwan as production director. On 29 May the first heavily peated spirit runs from the still again.
  • 2012Bruichladdich falls into the hands of Rémy Cointreau.

Bruichladdich lies on Loch Indaal, on the west side of Islay. The distillery was built in 1881 and has never been drastically modernised since. A large part of the original Victorian equipment is still there and production still runs to the 1881 layout. That is a rarity in Scotland: most distilleries were converted to computer-controlled installations in the twentieth century.

It is bottled without chill filtration and without added colouring. The same site also distils The Botanist gin, with twenty-two botanicals picked by hand on Islay.

Where the barley comes from and from which field is often literally printed on the label at Bruichladdich. The Octomore 13.3 mentions Lorgba field and Irene’s field, on Octomore farm itself.

Why are there so many single casks on our shelf?

Because Bruichladdich sells casks to independent bottlers, who release them under their own name. Claxton’s, Dramfool, The Maltman, Lady of the Glen and The Single Cask are all in our cabinet, mostly at cask strength and in editions of one hundred and fifty to a few hundred bottles. We look for those on purpose: the kind of bottle you do not find at a big chain.

A robust Islay is usually around forty to fifty ppm. Octomore goes far beyond that, and simply puts it on the bottle.

Frequently asked questions about Bruichladdich

What is the difference between Bruichladdich, Port Charlotte and Octomore?

Three series from the same distillery on Islay. Bruichladdich is unpeated, floral and fruity. Port Charlotte is heavily peated. Octomore is the most heavily peated series in existence; edition 14.2 has 128.9 ppm on the label. The difference lies in how much peat smoke was used when drying the barley.

How much Bruichladdich does ’t Bockje have in stock?

At the moment 47 different whiskies, plus two gift packs and three bottles of The Botanist gin. Among them are ten different Octomore and eight times Port Charlotte, including bottlings from independent bottlers such as Claxton’s and Dramfool.

Which Bruichladdich should you try first?

The Classic Laddie is the logical starting point: unpeated, approachable and typical of the house. If you want to know right away where the smoke comes from, the Port Charlotte 10 Years Old is the better choice. If you are unsure, give us a call.

What does ppm mean for whisky?

Ppm stands for parts per million phenol and says something about how much peat smoke the malted barley has absorbed. A robust Islay whisky is usually around forty to fifty ppm. Octomore goes far beyond that. It is not a measure of how smoky a whisky ultimately tastes, because maturation and cask choice play a part too.

Why do some bottles carry brands like Claxton’s and Dramfool?

Those are independent bottlers. They buy individual casks and bottle them under their own name, usually at cask strength and in small runs. A Claxton’s Warehouse Bruichladdich 20 Years Old, for example, is one from a run of 193 bottles. They are not part of the distillery's regular range.

Does ’t Bockje also ship Bruichladdich abroad?

Yes. We ship to about forty countries. Email info@bockje.nl if you want to know whether your country is included or how many bottles fit in one shipment.
