Japanese citrus alongside English juniper
Ukiyo does what a lot of Japanese gin does: it keeps the classic British base (juniper, coriander, angelica, lemon peel) and sets alongside it ingredients you will not find in a still in Europe. Yuzu and mikan for the citrus, sakura for the floral note, sansho pepper for the kick.
We have two: the dry Tokyo Dry and the Yuzu, in which that citrus takes centre stage. If you are not sure which, call 0570 541 278.

Ukiyo Japanese Yuzu Gin
The Yuzu Gin, in which the Japanese citrus fruit is the highlight.

What is yuzu?
An East Asian citrus fruit, about the size of a mandarin, with a thick, ridged peel. In Japan it is mainly the peel that is used rather than the juice. In gin, yuzu brings citrus, but with a different character than lemon or orange.
A Japanese word on an Irish wallet
- The brand in brief
- ChibaThe region east of Tokyo where it is made.
- CopperDistilled in copper pot stills.
- Yuzu & mikanThe two Japanese citrus fruits in the recipe.
- SakuraCherry blossom, for the floral note.
Ukiyo is made in Japan, in the Chiba region east of Tokyo, and marketed by Kirker Greer, a drinks house with roots in Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The name comes from Japanese: ukiyo is the ‘floating world’, the Edo-period term for the city’s nightlife, and the name for the woodblock prints that go with it. That also explains the colour gradient on the bottle.
Besides the classic gin botanicals, the recipe includes yuzu and mikan peel, sakura and sansho pepper, among others. Distilling is done in copper pot stills.
Ukiyo means ‘the floating world’: the nightlife of old Edo.
Tokyo Dry or Yuzu?
The Tokyo Dry is the dry bottle of the two and the logical choice if you are looking for a gin that behaves like a gin in a gin and tonic or a Martini.
The Yuzu puts that Japanese citrus up front. If you want to taste how Japanese gin differs from English gin, it is the more striking of the two.
Both are in the shop at Brink 2 in Bathmen. Call 0570 541 278 if you would like to discuss.
