Why here

The weissbier glass, and a smaller glass next to it

Weissbier calls for a tall, slender glass of half a litre. That is not just habit: the shape holds the thick head of foam that belongs to this beer. A 50 centilitre bottle of weissbier fits in in one go, foam and all.

We have that 50 centilitre glass in stock, and also a 30 centilitre beer glass for those who prefer to pour a smaller glass. Both available individually, even if you only need one.

About the glass

Why a wheat beer glass is tall and slim

  • The glass in brief
  • 50 clThe traditional size for weissbier.
  • Tall and slimWith a widening top.
  • Foam headWhat the shape is meant for.
  • 45 degreesThe angle at which you pour.

The traditional weizen glass holds half a litre and is tall and narrow, with a top that widens again. That shape is there to hold the foam head, and that head belongs with wheat beer.

Pouring is therefore different from pilsner. You rinse the glass first, hold it at an angle of about 45 degrees and pour most of the bottle out calmly. Leave about a centimetre of beer in the bottle, stand the glass upright, swirl the bottle so the yeast sediment comes loose and add that last bit. This way the yeast enters the beer like a cloud and you get the head you want.

Weihenstephan itself is in Freising, Bavaria. The Benedictine monastery was granted the right to brew in 1040; in 1803 the brewing rights and property passed to the state of Bavaria, and since 1921 the brewery has been called Bayerische Staatsbrauerei. Its claim to be the oldest brewery in the world is disputed: the authenticity of the 1040 charter is in question.

The slim, tall shape is there to hold the foam head.

Which glass do you choose?

Do you pour weissbier from a 50 centilitre bottle? Then the 50 centilitre glass is the intended size. A whole bottle fits in at once, including the foam.

Would you like a smaller glass? The 30 centilitre beer glass is the other size we carry. Handy if you taste several beers or simply prefer to pour smaller.
