Why here

Not madeira, not marsala, but a wine from Málaga

Sol de Malaga is listed in our online shop under madeira and marsala, and that is understandable: it is a sweet fortified wine and that fits its neighbours on the shelf. But strictly speaking it does not belong there. Madeira comes from a Portuguese island, marsala from Sicily, and Sol de Malaga comes from Andalusia, in the south of Spain.

We have one bottle of it, 75 centilitres and 15 percent according to the online shop data. In the trade, Sol de Málaga is attributed to Bodegas Málaga Virgen; we have not been able to confirm that with the producer itself and therefore say no more about it than this.

What is wine from Málaga?

Málaga is a wine region in Andalusia, around the city of the same name on the Mediterranean Sea. The region is best known for sweet wine. Only two main grapes are permitted: Pedro Ximénez and moscatel, usually Moscatel de Alejandría. In addition, Doradilla, Lairén and Romé may be blended in up to thirty percent.

The sweetness comes first of all from the grape itself. The bunches are dried in the sun on reed mats for up to three weeks, which concentrates the sugars. Then fermentation is halted, with alcohol or with arrope: boiled-down, unfermented must. The wines range from dry to very sweet and have between fifteen and twenty-two percent alcohol.

Unlike sherry, which matures in Jerez, El Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar, Málaga matures in bodegas in the city of Málaga itself.

Good to know

Málaga, Madeira and Marsala side by side

  • Three sweet wines, three regions
  • MálagaAndalusia, Spain. Pedro Ximénez and moscatel, dried in the sun.
  • MadeiraPortuguese island in the Atlantic Ocean. Matured in warmth.
  • MarsalaWestern Sicily, Italy. DOC since 1969, aged on oak.
  • 15 to 22%the range in which Málaga wines sit.

All three are wines in which fermentation is stopped at a certain moment, so that sugar remains in the wine and the alcohol percentage goes up. But the result differs greatly, because the road to it differs.

Madeira owes its flavour to heat. After fortification the wine is aged warm, in heated tanks or for years in the attics of the lodges in Funchal. Through that heat and the slow oxidation it gets its characteristic taste, and an opened bottle keeps much longer than ordinary wine.

Marsala comes from the west of Sicily and matures in oak casks, without heating. The designations on the label refer to aging time (Fine, Superiore, Vergine), color (Oro, Ambra, Rubino) and sweetness (secco, semisecco, dolce).

Málaga gets its sweetness mainly from the grape: the bunches dry in the sun before they are pressed. That is a different route to the same goal.
