Why here

From mixing bottle to collector's bottle

For most people, Bacardí is the white bottle behind the bar. That is only one side of the brand: we also have the Reserva Ocho with eight years in cask and the Facundo range, which runs into the hundreds of euros and bears the founder's name.

In between there is a row of flavoured versions (lime, coconut, raspberry, spiced) in various bottle sizes. Not sure which one you need? Call 0570 541 278. That is what we are here for.

About the house

A bat, a revolution and a move

  • The house in brief
  • 1862Facundo Bacardí Massó starts out in Santiago de Cuba.
  • 1960The Cuban assets are nationalised.
  • CatañoThe distillery in Puerto Rico.
  • FamilyStill largely in family hands.

Bacardí began on 4 February 1862 in Santiago de Cuba, founded by Facundo Bacardí Massó. After the Cuban revolution its assets were nationalised in 1960; the company built up production in Puerto Rico and Mexico, among other places.

The bat on the label dates from those early years. Bats hung in the first distillery; the founder's wife saw them as a symbol of luck. Customers soon asked for el ron del murciélago, the rum of the bat.

Today Bacardí Limited is based in Bermuda and is still largely owned by the family. The company itself calls its distillery in Cataño, Puerto Rico, the largest premium rum distillery in the world.

El ron del murciélago (the rum of the bat).

Which bottle

Where best to start

For a Cuba libre or a mojito, the Carta Blanca is the obvious bottle; that is what it was made for.

If you want a rum to drink neat, start with the Reserva Ocho. That is where the brand moves from mixing bottle to sipping bottle.

The Facundo range is a different story: small editions, higher prices and meant for pouring neat. Call 0570 541 278 if you would like to talk it over.
