Rum from the Indian Ocean
Mauritius lies far from the Caribbean but shares the same history of sugar cane. The rum made there sits between two styles: both fresh cane juice and molasses are used, and you can taste that.
We have two bottles: the Heritage and a version finished in sherry casks.
The two bottles we have in stock
Sugar cane in the Indian Ocean
- The bottles in brief
- MauritiusEast of Madagascar.
- Cane juiceAlongside molasses as raw material.
- SherryThe finish of the second bottle.
- 40%The strength of the Heritage.
Mauritius was a sugar island for centuries; rum came from it as a matter of course. The style leans on both the French agricole tradition (the island was French before it became British) and the molasses side.
Emperor uses both of those raw materials. That makes the rum fuller than a pure agricole and livelier than a pure molasses rum.
We also stock New Grove from the same island; the two side by side give a good picture of what Mauritius does.
Between agricole and molasses: that is how Mauritius does it.
Where best to start
The Heritage is the basis and the logical introduction.
The Sherry Finish is the bottle for anyone who wants to know what a sherry cask does to rum.
Call 0570 541 278 or drop in at Brink 2 in Bathmen if you would like to talk it over.
