Peat smoke in rum

Peat smoke belongs with Scotch whisky, not with rum. Schotman has developed a method for it and holds a patent on it; the brand calls itself the first to do this with rum.

In addition, Schotman bottles casks from well-known distilleries: Foursquare in Barbados, Long Pond and Lluidas Vale in Jamaica, TDL in Trinidad. The bottles are not chill-filtered, not coloured and not sweetened.

What is peated rum?

Whisky makers dry their barley over a peat fire; that smoke soaks into the grain and later into the whisky. With rum that step does not exist, because there is no malt to dry. Schotman has found its own way to get peat smoke into rum and holds a patent on it.

Schotman is the brand of Eric Koster, liqueur distiller in ’s-Heerenberg. It began with trials in a ten-litre still, to see whether peat smoke and rum could be brought together.

The first bottling was made in collaboration with Distilleerderij de Bronckhorst, the same house whose gin we also have in the cupboard.

Besides its own rum, Schotman bottles casks bought from well-known distilleries. Those bottles reach the market unfiltered, uncoloured and unsweetened, which you can see from the colour and the cloudiness in the glass.

Peat smoke belongs with whisky. Here it is in the rum.

Where best to start

If you want to know what this brand is about, start with the Peated Rum. That is the idea in its simplest form.

The Barrel Selections are a different story: these are cask bottlings from well-known distilleries, without smoke. For anyone who already knows Foursquare or Long Pond, these are the interesting bottles.
